Fremantle Dockers make the most of Perth conditions, head to Rottnest Island

Forgiving a temporary dearth of nautical puns, Fremantle’s attempts at forging a bond within their young squad took to the water on Saturday, with a number of the team making the most of the Perth conditions and boarding a luxury yacht for a Rottnest getaway.

Skipper Nat Fyfe, Bradley Hill, Michael Walters and emerging ruckman Sean Darcy were just some of the players to take to social media during the jaunt - with Darcy’s ability to jump from a boat while catching a can thrown by a teammate arguably the highlight of the content barrage.

As far as off-seasons go, it beats the hell out of running laps around an oval in Cockburn.

The boat cruise adds to a summer program which has already seen the Dockers take to the Gold Coast to bed down their new game plan on pre-season camp, and more recently shift sessions to Cottesloe Beach in an attempt to break things up.

The addition of senior players Jesse Hogan, Rory Lobb, Reece Conca and Travis Colyer, plus the emerging draftees, means the club has had to get hands-on in teaching a way of playing that they hope will lead them back to September in 2019.

“Back in 2016, no-one saw the way we plummeted down the ladder,” midfielder Connor Blakely said this week.

“From that moment on, we started that re-build. This year, more than ever we’re in a better position to potentially play finals.”

The Dockers kick off their JLT pre-season series against Collingwood at HBF Arena on March 4.
