PERTH’s Sami Whitcomb is one win away from a WNBA championship after Seattle beat Washington in game two of the grand final series today.

And in an amazing day for the former Perth Lynx captain, she has been added to the Australian Opals team for this month’s World Cup. Whitcomb will replace Leilani Mitchell who has been unable to overcome a leg injury.

Opals coach Sandy Brondello watched Whitcomb closely while leading the Phoenix Suns against Seattle during the WNBA semi-finals.

She said Whitcomb was the perfect replacement.

“Sami is a dynamic scorer and will add another dimension to our team with her shooting ability and will to win,” Brondello said.

“Her experience playing in the WNBA finals will also be a valuable asset during the World Cup.”

Whitcomb scored seven points for Seattle during their 75-73 win today. The Storm trailed by three points at three quarter time but finished stronger to claim victory on their home court.

The next two games are in Washington and Seattle needs only one win to claim the title.

Whitcomb will join her Opals teammates after the WNBA finals series is finished.

The Australians are preparing for the World Cup with practice games throughout Europe but will arrive in Spain for the tournament on September 14.

Whitcomb is unlikely to be available for the last warm up game against China on September 15 but Australia’s World Cup campaign doesn’t start until September 22.

“I am honoured and humbled for this opportunity to represent the Opals,” Whitcomb said.

“Australia is my home and to now be a part of this amazing Opals team is beyond a dream. You work your whole life for these opportunities, so Sandy’s call was pretty emotional for me.

“The first thing I did was call my wife who was sleeping in Australia and share the news with her. Then it felt real. I can’t wait to put on that singlet and compete for Australia.”
