A FORMER Adelaide Hills basketballer shot dead in the US has been remembered as a “bubbly and outgoing girl”.

American Tracey Carrington, 25, was shot multiple times while getting into her car last week in what Baltimore police believe was a targeted attack.

Local news outlets have reported she witnessed a double murder in an apartment complex in April.

Ms Carrington played Premier League basketball for Mt Barker club Eastern Mavericks in 2016.

Club president Marg van Schaijik, who hosted Ms Carrington at her home for a month in her only season at the club, said the Mavericks community was stunned when it heard the tragic news.

“We found out late Friday night and, as you can imagine, it’s just been a real shock to everyone at the club,” Ms van Schaijik said.

“She was a really friendly, bubbly, outgoing girl. It’s just so sad. She really fit in with the families she stayed with and with the club. When you’ve hosted her, it hits fairly hard to hear that news.”

Junior players will wear black armbands for games this weekend and a minute’s silence will be observed at the Mavericks’ presentation day on Sunday.

Ms Carrington was a middle-school substitute teacher who graduated from Baltimore’s Morgan State University in 2015 with a sociology degree.

She then moved to Adelaide, averaging 13.6 points per game for Eastern, before pursuing a career in Europe last year.

Baltimore police said Ms Carrington and a friend were leaving a bar late on Thursday night when she was shot multiple times.

The investigation into the murder is ongoing.
