Finch, Marsh bros find form in Dubai
A host of Australian batsmen found form but a head knock to opener Matthew Renshaw overshadowed the second day of Australia's tour game against Pakistan A.
Aaron Finch and the Marsh brothers all reached half-centuries as each of Australia's rejigged top four spent at least 90 balls at the crease on another scorching day in Dubai.
Marshes Shaun (54 not out) and Mitch (53 not out) batted patiently for the entirety of the final session to be unbeaten at the close.
Renshaw was floored in the first half-hour of day two after copping a hefty blow to his helmet at short leg, leaving the field immediately with the team doctor. A short time later, he was withdrawn from the match as a precaution. Marnus Labuschagne was permitted, thanks to a sporting gesture from the Pakistanis, to replace Renshaw in the XI.
Usman Khawaja (36) opened the batting in the injured batsman's stead, as Pakistan's first innings was wrapped up quickly after the early action, adding a further 31 runs to their overnight tally.
Lyon finished with 8-103 from 39.1 probing overs, the perfect tune-up for a Test series in which he shapes as the visiting side's most important bowler.
Finch looked assured in subsequently posting 54, hitting seven boundaries in his 90-ball stay to take another step towards a Test debut in the series-opener beginning October 7.
Captain Tim Paine has stressed the importance of batting time in the subcontinent, where Australia haven't won a Test series since 2011, and Abid Ali's 85, an innings that saw just four of the 263 balls he faced reach the boundary, might be the kind of blueprint the visiting captain is after.
Resuming the day with Pakistan A 6-247, Abid continued his resistance from the previous day and the manner in which he was undone was as unfortunate as the injury Renshaw suffered from it.
His firmly-struck pull shot off a marginally short delivery from Lyon went sailing high into the air off the tall Queenslander's helmet to offer Paine the easiest of catches.
Both batsman and fielder exited and the Australians soon followed suit as Lyon continued his dominant display, bowling Mohammad Rizwan (26) and having Waqas Mahmood (2) caught at slip.
Mitchell Starc was rewarded for a solid first-up effort on tour, claiming the only wicket to fall to pace with Wahab Riaz (12) edging low to Shaun Marsh at slip.
The stocky Finch got off to a fast start with Khawaja, backing up a delightful straight drive down the ground with a firm back-foot punch for four, before change bowlers Wahab Riaz and off-spinner Iftikhar Ahmed put the brakes on.
Iftikhar beat the bat of Khawaja on a number of occasions but the left-hander used the paddle sweep to good effect as the opening stand reached 82 after lunch.
Finch saluted his half-century but then edged behind off Maqsood, one of three left-arm pacemen in the Pakistan A side.
Khawaja doggedly fought through a series of half-shouts and close calls against Iftikhar, who finally got his man when the Australian nicked one to slip.
That brought the Marsh brothers together as spin was employed from either end, with the younger Mitch looking commanding off the back foot as he pasted skipper Asad Shafiq for a pair of boundaries through the off-side.
But it was Shaun who took control after the second break, timing the pants off a sequence of cuts and drives as the siblings were largely untroubled (a slippery spell from Wahab Riaz aside) during the final session.
After the elder Marsh brought up his half-century off a sedate 123 balls, the younger brother soon did the same (off 109 balls) and took the score past 200 as the halfway mark of the game neared.
