Let’s start by making it crystal clear that Sonny Bill Williams is only living in the moment or as he says “where his feet are”, and he insists he’s a long way off making any call on his future beyond next season with the Auckland Blues — and potentially the 2019 World Cup with the All-Blacks.

But. And it’s a pretty significant but.

The superstar code-hopper revealed to foxsports.com.au on Friday that he plans on bringing his family across the ditch and living in Sydney.

Add to that, the 33-year-old had only hours earlier met Roosters supremo Nick Politis for a coffee, and the pieces of the Williams puzzle are starting to come together.

Remember Williams and Politis have a handshake agreement in place that if he ever returns to the NRL it would be with the Tricolours, where he won a premiership in 2013.

He confirmed to us that has not changed, the deal forged with eye-contact and a family-like bond is iron-clad.

Williams’ contract with the Blues is also done at the end of the 2019 Super Rugby season.

He said the breakfast with Politis was mostly conversation about each other’s families, and as great friends they catch up every time he’s in Sydney.

“Me coming back (to the Roosters) was just a handshake deal with him that’s how close we are, and you can’t just make those memories and forget people,” he told foxsports.com.au.

“But mate I’m 33, I’m a realist, I’ll be 34 at the end of next year. It’s about being where my feet are. If that means at the end of the season it’s all finished my sporting career is done and dusted then it’s humbling, thank God, I’ll be grateful.

“But if there are opportunities and some offers come through then I’ll sit down with my wife and see what’s best for me, her and the kids.

“I think eventually we’ll end up living in Sydney, but there’s a possibility the sporting career could be done and dusted by the end of next year or there’s a possibility I could try and hang on for a little bit more.”

Then the kicker — he knows his body would handle an NRL season.

“I’ve been Muslim so long it’s allowed me to look after my body, keep my body in really good nick and I could choose to play on, but I could choose not to,” he continued.

“I know it sounds like I’m sitting on the fence but that’s my mindset, I’m just trying to live day to day.”

Cooper Cronk is off contract at the end of the 2019 season, and if he calls curtains as expected that’s an estimated $1 million the Roosters can add to their war chest.
