Controversy has struck in the W-League.

With Western Sydney Wanderers keeper Jada Whyman down injured, the ball fell to Canberra United fullback and Matildas star Ellie Carpenter.

But instead of kicking the ball out, the defender opted to play to the whistle, and instead took a shot at the open net and scored. In the process, she opened the scoring for her team in the 52nd minute.

The Wanderers didn’t protest the decision to award the goal, and luckily they went on to score twice themselves to seal a 2-2 draw and nab their first points of the season.

When asked after the game, Carpenter had no regrets about her decision to shoot.

“I just saw a tackle and saw an open goal and I just went for it and shot and it went in,” she told Daniel Garb on the Fox Sports coverage.

“A goal is a goal and it got us up then so I just went for it.”

When asked if she had any reservations after the game she responded: “Na, not really.”

However, fans on social media suggested the Matildas star perhaps showed poor sportmanship by not kicking the ball out.
