ENGLISH, an entry for the Group 3 $500,000 Sydney Stakes at Royal Randwick on Saturday, has been retired to stud.

Owners Newhaven Park announced on Monday that English won’t race again. She will start her new career as a broodmare and be mated with Yarraman Park Stud’s I Am Invincible.

A dual Group 1 winner of almost $3.5 million prizemoney, English had been aimed towards The Everest on Saturday before she pulled up sore after a track gallop last week.

Trainers Gai Waterhouse and Adrian Bott were still hopeful of having English ready to race in the Sydney Stakes before Newhaven revealed their decision to retire the daughter of Encosta De Lago.

There were 23 entries for the Sydney Stakes but they did not include English’s stablemate, Invincible Star. She was also Everest-bound until suffering a leg injury last week.

Pierata heads the Sydney Stakes entries that also includes Clearly Innocent and Tulip, who both ran in The Everest last year, Tactical Advantage, Spright, Osborne Bulls, Music Magnate, Performer and Voodoo Lad.

There is a bumper 188 entries for The Everest meeting including 27 nominations for the Group 3 $500,000 Craven Plate (2000m), featuring a potential rematch between Hartnell and D’Argento.

Godolphin’s Hartnell edged out and D’Argento in an Epsom Handicap thriller nine days ago. Both horses have also been nominated for the Group 1 $1 million Caulfield Stakes (2000m).

The $500,000 St Leger Stakes (2600m) has also attracted a healthy entry with 16 stayers.
