The Bundesliga outfit are keen to lure the German midfielder back to the Bundesliga but their coach admits the Real Madrid man "is spoilt for choice" over a move

Roberto Di Matteo has admitted Schalke could miss out on the capture of Real Madrid midfielder Sami Khedira due to the stiff competition for the Germany international's signature.

The 27-year-old has an expiring contract at the Santiago Bernabeu side and he confirmed earlier this week that he will not extend his stay in the Spanish capital.

Schalke are believed to be sitting in pole position to lure him back to the Bundesliga but, with Arsenal, Manchester United and Bayern Munich having been linked with him in the past, Di Matteo accepts they face a fight to sign him.

"There is not a single coach in the world who would not want to have a player of his calibre in his team," Di Matteo told Sport1.

"The door is wide open for Khedira.

"However, I think he is spoilt for chance when it comes to picking his next destination. It will be very difficult to take him to Schalke."

Khedira joined Madrid from Stuttgart in the summer of 2010 and has since made over over 150 official appearances for the Bernabeu outfit, winning La Liga in 2011-12 and the Champions League in 2013-14.
