Central Coast Mariners are close to securing Western Sydney Wanderers midfielder Jacob Melling on a deal until the end of the the current season.

The Covert Agent can reveal the Mariners are currently in negotiations with the 22-year-old, who appears to be surplus to requirements at the Wanderers.

It's believed Mariners coach Paul Okon is keen to sign Melling because of the temporary departure of star midfielder Daniel De Silva with the Australian Under 23's.

Melling will likely slot into the defensive midfield position of Dutch star Tom Hiariej, who will move into a more advanced role to cover De Silva's loss.

The Adelaide-born youngster has only played 55 minutes in the league this season and has missed the past four Western Sydney matchday squads under Josep Gombau.

The Mariners would be Melling's fourth A-League club after stints at Adelaide United, Melbourne City and the Wanderers
