Conor McGregor says comeback fight vs Frankie Edgar denied for UFC 222
CONOR McGregor has claimed he wanted to fight Frankie Edgar at UFC 222 - but the UFC said no.
In an Instagram post, McGregor confirmed he would fight again and claimed he had offered to step in against Edgar after featherweight champion Max Holloway withdrew injured from UFC 222, on March 4 (AEDT) in Las Vegas.
The UFC said no, McGregor said, as there would not be sufficient time to make necessary preparations.
However, McGregor’s claim was fiercely rebutted by Edgar’s manager.
“When Max pulled out, I told the UFC, we’ll fight Conor at any weight class he wants,” Ali Abdelaziz told ESPN. “The UFC told us they can’t even get him to fight in his weight class.
“He’s become just like Floyd Mayweather. This guy doesn’t want to fight. He does what Floyd Mayweather does. He just wants to stay in the media. He likes the attention, but he’s not getting it because he’s not fighting. He should have fought Frankie two years ago. He ducked him for two years. He’s full of s***. He’s a liar.”
McGregor hasn’t fought in the UFC since UFC 205 in November 2016 - when he won the lightweight title from Eddie Alvarez at Madison Square Garden and became the first fighter to hold two UFC belts at once.
He is currently in a bizarre limbo, with Tony Ferguson and Khabib Nurmagomedov to fight at UFC 223 in April for the full championship - but the Irish megastar has not been stripped of the 155-pound belt at this stage. It is anticipated that he will fight the winner of that match later in the year.
McGregor hasn’t fought since August, when he made $100 million from a boxing match against Floyd Mayweather.
