Chonburi FC snatch up Singaporean Zulfahmi Arifin
Thai League 1 side, Chonburi FC have moved to strengthened their team for the upcoming 2018 season by filling up the ASEAN import slot afforded to each team for the new season.
The club who is also known as The Sharks, have gone for Singaporean international Zulfahmi who nominally operates in central midfield but could also play in centre of defence if required. A product of the Young Lions program, Zulfahmi has progressed through the ranks and is now a full fledged senior international with the Singapore national team. The left footer whose physical presence in the centre of midfield can be a real asset for Chonburi, was previously also part of the Lions XII team that competed in the Malaysia Super League.
With the move, Zulfahmi becomes the second Singaporean in this close season to seal a move up north, with goal keeper Izwan signing a contract with Nongbua Pitchaya FC earlier. Chonburi finished seventh in the Thai League 1 last season and are making a real effort in getting back into the AFC Champions League spots, having previously featured in Asia's top cup competition back in 2008.
Zulfahmi leaves behind Singapore's Hougang United who in their 2017 season, only finished a lowly 6th spot in the 9-teams league, having suffered as many defeats as their wins and draws combined. Despite the relatively weaker strength of the S-League, it does seem that Singaporean players are more preferred than their Malaysian counterpart, when it comes to the Thai clubs
