Sydney FC have closed the transfer window with a double deal, bringing in winger Mitch Austin and releasing striker Charles Lokoli-Ngoy to join another A-League club.

After landing Iranian striker Reza Ghoochannejhad on loan to the end of the season, coach Steve Corica persuaded Austin to leave Newcastle to add some much-needed pace to his attack.

Austin, who has previously played for the Mariners and Melbourne Victory, will go into the squad for Sunday’s clash with Melbourne City — taking the 21 shirt previously worn by Lokoli-Ngoy.

The latter’s release is scarcely surprising, having failed to translate a prolific youth team scoring record into any impact at A-League level, even though he was highly rated by previous coach Graham Arnold.

Austin, who grew up in Manly, gets an opportunity to make an impact in both the A-League and the Asian Champions League, having made just five appearances for the Jets this season, all off the bench.

“I’m very happy to be joining Sydney FC and it feels like I’m coming home,” said the 27-year-old. “This is a fantastic opportunity for me to be joining the current Premiers and my intention is to win trophies with the club.

“Sydney FC has been the dominant force within the A-League over the past few years and to be signing for a club with such a winning mentality is an honour.

“To get the chance to compete for a place in the AFC Champions League squad is hugely exciting for me; as is playing for the club I supported as a boy.”

Sydney have struggled badly for speed in the final third in the wake of Trent Buhagiar’s ACL injury on the eve of the season, and Corica had been seeking such a signing even before the transfer window opened.

“Mitch has got a lot of pace and can play anywhere across our frontline so will give us an extra option up front,” he said.

“He will worry defenders and added to the quality we already have in our forward line, I think it will strengthen our squad.”
