Isaiah Thomas is closing in on his return.

The Cavaliers on Friday will hold a rare practice on the road so the veteran point guard can scrimmage with his teammates in a full-court setting for the first time since being traded to Cleveland in August.

"It'll be a practice, get some shots up, cover defensive rules and principles and also scrimmage a little bit so Isaiah can get a feel and play 5-on-5," Cavs coach Tyronn Lue said before Wednesday's game, via ESPN.

Thomas, who has been rehabbing from a hip condition he reaggravated during the playoffs last season, was sent to the Canton Charge last week as part of his G League assignment.

Although the team initially targeted a mid-December return, the Cavs are hopeful Thomas will make his season debut in the first week of January. Ironically, the Cavs are scheduled to take on Thomas' former team in Boston on Jan. 3.

After dropping three of their last four meetings, the Cavs (24-11) will wrap up their three-game road trip against the Jazz (15-21) at 8 p.m. ET Saturday
