Cats shore up ruck stocks, re-sign quartet
GEELONG has locked in ruckmen Rhys Stanley and Ryan Abbott, with the pair signing two-year contract extensions.
The 27-year-old Abbott, who made his debut in round 20 this season, knocked back offers from rival clubs to recommit to the Cats, as revealed by AFL.com.au last month.
Stanley, who turns 28 in December, has played 57 games for the Cats since being traded from St Kilda in 2014.
Stanley held the No.1 ruck mantle for the majority of this season, but when he was floored by a calf injury, Abbott stepped up to lead the ruck in the latter stages of the season.
Abbott held his own against Tiger Toby Nankervis in his debut and was also solid in the elimination final against All Australian ruckman Max Gawn.
"Rhys produced a strong block of games this year where he demonstrated the type of football he can play," general manager of football Simon Lloyd said.
"He is focussed on taking his game to another level through consistency and professionalism.
"Ryan had a consistent year, working hard at his craft and was rewarded with an AFL debut late in the season.
"Ryan shows a lot of drive, we look forward to seeing him develop over the next two years."
The Cats have also re-signed rookies Sam Simpson and Jamaine Jones.
Simpson, 20, has added another two years to his contract after managing a single senior appearance in 2018.
