Cats get SANFL tall Kreuger via Blues
GEELONG has secured 196cm South Adelaide forward Nathan Kreuger in a deal that could help Carlton facilitate a move for Mitch McGovern.
The Cats will give Carlton pick No.42 in return for Kreuger, who the Blues have first access to as part of a state league compensation package received from the AFL last month.
The Cats received pick No.42 from the Lions in a deal for Lincoln McCarthy earlier in the day.
Kreuger, a talented 19-year-old who can play at either end of the field, impressed for South Adelaide in the SANFL this season and received an invite to the SA State Combine.
Speaking on Monday, Geelong list manager Stephen Wells confirmed that a deal taking Kreuger to GMHBA Stadium during this month's NAB AFL Trade Period was in place.
"He had a terrific year in the SANFL in his first year of senior footy," Wells said.
"We're very excited to have him join our club. We see Nathan as more of a key position type player at either end of the ground. We don't expect him to be playing in the ruck."
The trade involving Kreuger could ultimately help Carlton facilitate a move for McGovern later this month, with the Adelaide forward already requesting a trade to Ikon Park.
The Blues currently hold picks 1, 24, 25, 42, 65 and 73, though Crows list manager Justin Reid said whatever state league compensation they received could help the deal over the line.
"There's some consideration to that," Reid said.
"We'll work through that with Carlton at the moment."
