FALLEN Test batsman Cam Bancroft will take his next big step towards redemption when he plays his first game of cricket on WA soil since being caught ball tampering while wearing the baggy green against South Africa in March.

The 25-year-old, pictured, has been named captain of long-time club side Willetton and will return to action when the Premier Cricket season begins next weekend with fixtures on consecutive days against Midland-Guildford and Fremantle.

Willetton president Ron Kukura said the talented opener was appointed skipper after leading pre-season training and throwing himself into encouraging and developing younger players at the club.

“Cam has really been putting his best foot forward and putting his heart and soul into the whole situation,” Mr Kukura said.

“I’ve had lot of discussions with him over the past few months and he is going well, he’s fine.”

Bancroft, pictured, played his junior cricket at Willetton and Mr Kukura said he was held in high regard.

“He started with us at 11 years old and has been very much a part of the group for a long time now,” he said.

“We only saw a limited amount of him last year because of his Test duties but whenever he was available he always came back and played club cricket for us.”

Mr Kukura tipped a determined Bancroft to pile on the runs for the Dragons this summer and force his way back into the international equation.

“His first objective will be to get some runs and once he does that his name will come up in lights for State selection,” he said.

“His suspension ends on December 29 and then subject to his form I believe the Scorchers could add him to their squad for the Big Bash. That’s what we are hoping will happen.”
