Manchester United will look to join Arsenal and Manchester City in the hat for the Carabao Cup semi-finals when they take on Bristol City at Ashton Gate on Wednesday evening.

The Red Devils are the reigning champions and have been handed a tie against the only non-Premier League outfit left in the competition and they will be confident in their ability to progress.

As the fixture list intensifies over the festive period, there are likely to be some changes, but Jose Mourinho has said they will be minimal due to Bristol City's standing in the Championship.

GAME PREVIEW

The EFL Cup was the first trophy Mourinho won after taking the reins at Old Trafford, but, while he will surely wish to defend it, other competitions take priority this season.

United's designs on league glory took a hammer-blow last week when they lost at home to Manchester City, but there is still intense pressure to ensure a top-four finish, with the likes of Chelsea, Liverpool and Arsenal not far behind.

As such, with league clashes against Leicester City and Burnley to come, Mourinho is expected to use the Bristol City match as an opportunity to rest some of his key players.

The Portuguese has hinted that Mkhitaryan will play a part, while other fringe players such as Luke Shaw and Zlatan Ibrahimovic, as well as back-up goalkeeper Sergio Romero, may also come into contention for a starting place.

Bristol City are flying high in the Championship and manager Lee Johnson is focused on mounting a promotion charge, so he too, has suggested that he will include some youth players in his matchday squad.

Regardless, the Red Devils will have to be at their best to see off the Robins, who also have the home advantage
