ROAR coach John Aloisi denied complacency was a problem after Brisbane blew the chance to move into the A-League’s top six when they were held to a 2-2 draw by competition cellar dweller s Wellington Phoenix.

A week after beating first-placed Sydney FC 2-1, the Roar failed to get the better of the last-placed Phoenix at Westpac Stadium despite Wellington being depleted through international duty and injuries.

A win would have lifted Brisbane into the top six after Western Sydney’s 3-0 loss to Melbourne City on Saturday night.

But with three rounds remaining, the Wanderers remain in sixth place, a point ahead of Brisbane.

While the Roar’s finals destiny remains in their own hands, they will surely rue their inability to beat the Phoenix on three different occasions this season in they fail to make the top six.

Aloisi stressed Brisbane did not take a relaxed attitude into yesterday’s contest after their recent good run of form, including the previous weekend’s away win over Sydney.

“I said to the players before the match that this game was going to be harder than the Sydney game,” Aloisi said.

“Wellington are playing with freedom. They can’t make the top six and a lot of their players are playing for contracts.

“Even though they had players missing, they had dangerous players out there. In saying that, we didn’t do enough when were in good positions.”

Brisbane took the lead in the 50th minute through attacking midfielder Brett Holman.

A sweet pass from veteran Italian striker Massimo Maccarone found Holman unmarked beyond the far post.

The former Socceroos star did the rest with a classy volley that was too good for Phoenix goalkeeper Oliver Sail.

However, the Roar could only on to their lead for three minutes.

Fed by teammate Matija Ljujic, former Brisbane forward Andrija Kaluderovic scored his first goal since December in equalising for the hosts.

Wellington went ahead 11 minutes later via Logan Rogerson, who got in between Roar defenders Daniel Bowles and Ivan Franjic to head home a Nathan Burns cross.

But the Phoenix also failed to keep their lead for long, with the Roar back on level terms in the 68th minute.

Phoenix midfielder Adam Parkhouse cleared a Maccarone header off the line but the ball fell for Danish midfielder Thomas Kristensen, who netted from close range.

Fahid Ben Khalfallah had a great chance to put Brisbane ahead in the 84th minute after being found unmarked in the penalty area by Maccarone. But he dragged his shot wide of the target.

The woodwork then saved the Roar four minutes later when a sizzling strike from Burns hit the crossbar.
