Brisbane Bullets close to securing former NBA player Alonzo Gee as final piece
BRISBANE are poised to sign former NBA player Alonzo Gee as a US import for the 2018-19 NBL season.
The Bullets are in deep negotiations with the 31-year-old small forward who played 417 games — and started more than 200 times — in the NBA with Washington, San Antonio, Cleveland, Denver, Portland and New Orleans.
The 198cm-tall, 100kg Gee was most recently plying his trade in Puerto Rico after playing in the second-tier NBA G-League with the Sioux Falls Skyforce — Denver’s affiliate team.
Former Brisbane import Torrey Craig played for the Skyforce and Denver last year and is understood to have recommended Gee to the Bullets.
Brisbane would love Gee to replicate the heroics of the athletic Craig who gave the club scoring, rebounding and defensive power before being picked up by the Nuggets.
Gee can hit the three-ball, as well as going to work in the paint, and is understood to be a solid defender and good teammate on and off the court.
Gee would complete the Bullets roster for this season with the club going with two imports — Gee and Stephen Holt.
Clubs are allowed three US imports but Brisbane has been boosted by the return of Boomers forward and ex-Chicago Bulls forward Cameron Bairstow.
In the 2015-16 NBA season, Gee started more than 30 games for New Orleans. He has career averages of 6.6 points and 3.3 rebounds per game in the NBA. In the 2011-12 season with Cleveland, he averaged 10.6 points and five rebounds per game.
Born and raised in Florida, he turned pro in 2009 after attending the University of Alabama for four years.
Brisbane have two pre-season games against Cairns in Rockhampton this week.
