THE turnstiles have been oiled at the country’s newest and biggest motorsport park, The Bend, for the expected arrival of more than 30,000 racing fans.

“It is going to happen and it will happen very, very quickly over the next two days,’’ said proud park owner Dr Sam Shahin as he checked on corporate marquees throughout the venue on Tuesday.

“We have a venue, and a product, and an event that the entire state will be very proud of in a few days time.’’

The Bend’s four-day OTR Supersprint will feature competitors in the Virgin Australia Supercars Championships.

With 10 of 16 rounds of the 2018 championship – which began at the Adelaide 500 in March – completed, Ford’s Scott McLaughlin leads on 2579 points from Holden’s Shane van Gisbergen’s 2490.

Like many Tailem Bend locals, Hair and Body owner Hayley Smedley said she did not know what to expect from the feature racing event but hoped it would be “great for businesses”.

She is hoping that some of the corporate racegoers “may need emergency hair and beauty work” over the weekend.

“We haven’t had a really big event yet at the track so this week will tell,’’ she said.

“There are a lot of individual businesses which will benefit massively but I don’t know about mine yet.”

“I might get a call up to provide some services I hope.”

So far, the only real signs in town of the looming avalanche of visitors are the chequered flags lining the main street. And two flags held by Ms Smedley take pride of place, sewn for a 1985 Adelaide Grand Prix Advertiser Newspaper promotion run by newsagent Kay Hughes. Work crews and inquisitive tourists were the early visitors to the motorsport park yesterday.

But the arrival of scores of racing team trucks tomorrow, the park will be a hive of activity. Moana couple Susan and Garry Stone were among early visitors milling around the foyer of the 100-room Rydges Hotel – a centre piece of the facility – admiring $3 million sports cars.

“I can’t believe what they have done with the place, and we will come back for one of the races,” Mr Stone said.
