Baseball Hall of Fame 2018: Vladimir Guerrero to have Angels cap on plaque
Vladimir Guerrero might have been the last player to have an Expos cap on his Baseball Hall of Fame plaque. Instead, he'll be the first to represent the Angels.
Guerrero said Thursday at a news conference that his bronze likeness at the Cooperstown, N.Y., museum will be decked out in an Angels cap.
While Guerrero did win the American League MVP award in 2004, his first year with the Angels, he began his career with the Expos, spent more seasons there (eight to six) and was a more productive player in Montreal (.978 OPS vs. .927 OPS).
Angels owner Arte Moreno was in attendance at the news conference in Manhattan where Guerrero made the announcement.
Guerrero was the one member of the 2018 class voted in Wednesday whose cap status was in question. Trevor Hoffman spent 15 1/2 of his 18 MLB seasons with the Padres, while Jim Thome was with the Indians for 13 years, more than three times as long as any of his five other teams. Chipper Jones, of course, played his entire 19-year career with the Braves.
The Angels have been around since 1961 and finally will see their logo represented in Cooperstown.
