Australia's desperate tour of England has ended with sixth successive defeat as the red-hot hosts charged to a 28-run victory in the one-off Twenty20 international at Edgbaston.

The match followed a familiar script with Australia winning the toss, England's batsmen clocking up a huge score and then using spin to rip through the tourists' middle order.

On a glorious summer's evening in Birmingham, Eoin Morgan's side got off to a flying start with in-form Jos Buttler (61) and Jason Roy (44) putting on 95 for the first wicket.

Alex Hales (48) and Joe Root (35) helped England past the 200 mark with a Jonny Bairstow six from the final ball of the innings helping his side reach a formidable total of 5/221.

Debutant Mitchell Swanson finished with respectable figures of 2-37 with Marcus Stoinis and Billy Stanlake taking a wicket apiece.

Australia were unable to match England's fast start and D'Arcy Short was the first to depart for 16 when he chipped a Liam Plunkett delivery into the hands of Moeen Ali.

The arrival of Glenn Maxwell to the crease failed to improve the run rate with the big-hitting Victorian scoring just 10 from seven balls before being deceived by a Chris Jordan slow ball and bowled through the gate.

Travis Head exited for 15 after falling to the spin of Moeen with Hales taking a good catch on the boundary.

Alex Carey (3) and Marcus Stoinis (0) departed in the same over to Adil Rashid's leg-spin to leave Australia in all sorts of problems at 5-72.

Finch had faced just 19 balls of the innings when the fifth wicket fell, but finally managed to get himself on strike to give Australia a sniff of a chance of victory.

The skipper smashed his next 22 balls for 60 runs, before becoming Rashid's third victim with Jordan just staying inside the boundary rope to take a steepling catch.

Jordan then dismissed Ashton Agar (29) and Kane Richardson in successive deliveries before Willey ended AJ Tye's entertaining innings of 22 with a good catch off Plunkett.

Billy Stanlake was the last man out for seven, Morgan taking the catch from the penultimate ball of the match as Australia were bowled out for 193.
