Tommy Robredo delighted the home crowd at the Valencia Open with a shock 7-6 (7-3) 6-3 win over fifth seed John Isner.

The Spaniard took 81 minutes to beat his American opponent in the first round and is now just three wins away from his 500th career victory.

Robredo had lost all three of his previous encounters against Isner but dominated on his first serve and also held firm to save five break points.

The 32-year-old, who will face Lu Yen-hsun in the second round, was one of three home players to win on Tuesday as Feliciano Lopez and Fernando Verdasco also progressed to round two.

Fourth seed Lopez took just over an hour to dispatch Slovakian qualifier Norbert Gombos 6-4 6-4 to set up an all-Spanish clash in the next round with Pablo Carreno Busta.

Things were not as comfortable for Verdasco, who had to show great resolve to clinch the deciding set against Leonardo Mayer to win 6-4 3-6 6-3 in just under two hours.

Only Fabio Fognini's 6-4 6-2 win over Spanish qualifier Albert Ramos-Vinolas stopped it from being a clean sweep for the home fans.

Elsewhere in the first round, Alexandr Dolgopolov cruised to a comfortable 6-0 6-3 triumph over eighth seed Gilles Simon.

He will now meet Jeremy Chardy in the next round after the Frenchman also had an easy day at the office, taking just over 45 minutes to beat Tunisian qualifier Malek Jaziri 6-2 6-1.

Dusan Lajovic came through a mammoth second-set tie break to beat Joao Sousa 6-3 7-6 (10-8) and seventh seed Kevin Anderson beat Philipp Kohlschreiber 6-3 6-4.
