FINALLY, after three seasons of imperious domination, there might have a legitimate challenger to Winx’s Cox Plate throne.

Benbatl’s Group 1 Caulfield Stakes (2000m) victory was hardly Winx-like in the making but it oozed quality – and gave confidence to trainer Saeed bin Suroor to tackle the world’s best horse at The Valley on October 27.

As TAB elevated the Godolphin flagbearer to $11 second favourite behind Winx ($1.20), bin Suroor said Benbatl would be given the chance to do what no other horse has managed in three years and 28 starts – beat Winx.

“The filly is the best of the best but the plan has to been to run the horse since January,” bin Suroor said.

“We take our chance and see how well we go there (Cox Plate).

“She is just a star.”

The highest-rated horse – 123- to come to Australia in 16 years, Benbatl reeled off impressive sectionals to deliver Irish jockey Pat Cosgrave’s maiden Australian Group 1.

1. REDZEL

2. Trapeze Artist

3. Osborne Bulls

REDZEL has defended his inaugural Everest crown winning Saturday’s $13 million international feature, leading from start to finish in front of a huge crowd at Royal Randwick.

Ridden again by Kerrin McEvoy, the Peter and Paul Snowden took full advantage of his inside draw to quickly set the tempo of the race, kicking clear over the rise to establish a commanding lead on his rivals.

Redzel pocketed $6m for Saturday’s win taking his carer earnings to close on $15m.

“It was a masterful ride and Kerrin judged it perfectly,’’ co-trainer Peter Snowden said. “He did it tough today. He lead from the front and I am just so proud of the horse.’’

Redzel was never seriously challenged at any stage of the race, safely holding off a brave Trapeze Artist who had beaten him in the T.J. Smith by 2-lengths when they met in the autumn over the Everest journey of 1200m.

1. LAND OF PLENTY

2. Hartnell

3. Siege Of Quebec

DARREN Weir continued his domination of the Group 1 Toorak Handicap when he won the event for the fourth time in five years when Land Of Plenty overcame a wide draw to win.

His rider Damian Lane also made it back-to-back wins having won the previous year on Weir’s Tosen Stardom.

Weir’s Toorak Handicap winning streak began in 2014 with Trust In A Gust 2014 and was followed by Lucky Hussler the next year before winning the past two runnings.

Weir said he had set Land Of Plenty for the Sir Rupert Clarke Stakes, which he finished third, and the Toorak Handicap.

“He was great in the other race and things didn’t work out but now we can he’s won one,” he said.

Hartnell ran a brave second with his big weight and looked a winning chance until the closing stages.

Land Of Plenty was heavily backed from $6.50 to start a $4.20 favourite and he won by a length and a quarter over Hartnell ($9) with Siege Of Quebec ($10) a half length away third.

1. PIERATA

2. Jungle Edge

3. Clearly Innocent

PIERATA made a mess of a top quality field of sprinters in the Everest consolation, the Group 3 $500,000 Sydney Stakes (1200m).

Trainer Greg Hickman had wanted to get Pierata into The Everest all spring without success and was still hopeful of a late call-up last week when it was learned Home Of The Brave was coming out of the race.

“It’s all about the contracts and what you are dealing with,’’ Hickman said.

“There was nothing the owners were satisfied with so we had to move with his program.

“We thought we might get over a bit more ground but maybe he doesn’t get a strong mile at that level.

“But coming back to 1200m with blinkers on, his attitude was a lot better today. He looked enormous and it fitted him perfectly.”

Pierata ($4.40 equal favourite) sprinted brilliantly from the top of the straight to score by nearly three lengths.

1. AMPHITRITE

2. Fundamentalist

3. Seabrook

MASTER trainer darren Weir didn’t think any of is three runners were good enough to win the Group 1 Thousand Guineas.

But Amphite defied Weir’s expectations and stormed down the middle to take out the $500,000 race.

It was the three-year-old fillies fourth win in a row in just her seventh start and now a trip to the Wakeful Stakes (2000m) during the Flemington Carnival.

“She’s a beauty, the further she goes the better she’ll get,” Weir said.

“It doesn’t matter where she goes now though, we just have to look after her.”

Questions over short-priced favourite Sweet Melody’s ability to run out the 1600m were founded as she failed to run a place.

3. Our Crown Mistress

GUTSY Queensland mare Winter Bride may have won herself a ticket to her first Group 1 race – the Myer Classic – with a fourth successive win after holding out Booker to score in Group 3 Cape Grim Beef Steaks at Caulfield.

Trainer Toby Edmonds said he was still pondering the options for his daughter of Not A Single Doubt, but said a step up to Group 1 was on the cards.

While his other four-year-old mare Houtzen will head towards the Manikato Stakes (1200m), Winter Bride could take on the mares in the Myer Classic (1600m).

“We could throw her in the deep end, if you wanted to have a crack at a Group 1 while she is in form, this is the time to do it,” Edmonds said.

“We didn’t accept with the Manikato; we’ve got Houtzen in that … we will separate them.

“That is the back of my mind – the Myer – but whether she gets 1600m, (we don’t know).”

1. I LIKE IT EASY

2. Evalina

3. Bubbles’n’troubles

OWNER Bert Vieira was back at the races for the first time since his wife Gai was critically injured in a car crash more than a month ago and finally he had reason to smile again at Royal Randwick.

His filly, I Like It Easy, might have scored an upset win but everyone was cheering for her as she held on for a game win in Listed $140,000 Reginald Allen Quality (1400m).

The win was even more poignant as I Like It Easy is out of Gai’s Choice, the smart race mare Vieira named after his wife.

Vieira has kept a daily hospital bedside vigil for his wife since she was the innocent victim of a high speed police car chase.

There were emotional scenes between the Vieira family after the races as I Like It Easy ($11) fought back after being headed in the straight to score by a half neck from Evalina ($6.50) with Bubbles’n’Troubles ($5.50) a short head away third.

3. Meryl

TRAINER Tony McEvoy will send star filly Sunlight to the $1 million Manikato Stakes at The Valley in two weeks after she reasserted her authority at Caulfield.

Backed heavily late the three-year-old gun started $1.90 favourite and racked up her seventh win in 10 starts, putting away a quality field in an all the way win.

McEvoy said he preferred the 1200m dash around the bend at The valley than a straight dash at Flemington in the Coolmore Stud DStakes on Derby day because Sunlight was a “pure speed horse”.

“They are the two races but she’ll only carry 51kgs in the Manikato and goes around that bend where as the straight at Flemingont can work againsspeed horses, and that’s why she is,” McEvoy said after the win.

“I’m very excited about her, very excited.”

3. Ready’s Girl

ANAHEED provided trainers Peter and Paul Snowden with another impressive early season juvenile winner after she romped home with the opener on Everest Day at Royal Randwick.

In a dominant debut, Anaheed streaked away to a four lengths win in the Victory Vein Plate (1000m).

Team Snowden also produced Catch Me to win the Gimcrack Stakes by a commanding margin on Epsom Day and have two fillies with obvious potential.

The well-bred Anaheed ($5 favourite), ridden by Tim Clark, was far too good for her rivals, handling the heavy track with ease while Disruptor ($5.50) ran on well for second with Ready’s Girl ($21) two lengths away third.

“We were very happy with the way she handled Monday’s trial,’’ Paul Snowden said.

“It wasn’t a testing trial and she still had a fair bit in hand so we thought we will have a lash, see if she draws well.

“So, it was basically up to her to see how she came through the trial and she hasn’t turned a hair all week which is what you are looking for.’’

1. CHAMPAGNE BOOM

2. Biscara

3. Wedgetail

THE Lindsay Park team made it three successive Inglis Debutant Stakes victories when smart filly Champagne Boom launched their Caulfield Carnival by storming home late to win a roughly-run race.

The daughter of impressive young sire Spirit Of Boom, who started $7.5, was slowly away from the gate, but launched late to score from luckless stablemate Biscara ($7) and the Tony McEvoy-trained Wedgetail ($6.5).

Utzon, the much-talked about white horse, started a $5.5 favourite but knuckled at the start and had little luck in running, finishing ninth.

Ben Hayes said Champagne Boom – who joined Qafila and Wait For No One as Lindsay Park’s winners of this race in the past three years – would likely now head to the Group 3 Ottawa Stakes at Flemington on Melbourne Cup day.

“She was slowly away, Craig (Williams) did the right thing and rode her quietly from the barrier and she came through the field really well,” Hayes said. “She was strong through the line, we are thrilled.

“It is good to get a winner earlier, it takes a little bit of the pressure off, but it is a long carnival.”
