Australia's Daria Gavrilova and Ashleigh Barty are into the second round of the WTA event in Wuhan, China, after a straight-sets wins on Monday.

World No.33 Gavrilova dismissed Jelena Ostapenko, the 10th seed, 6-2 6-4 to complete one of the biggest upsets of the Wuhan Open so far.

Barty then battled to a 7-5 6-4 win over Australian-born British player Johanna Konta.

Ostapenko, the 2017 French Open winner, was second best in every category against Gavrilova, particularly on her first serve.

And the Australian capitalised on her opponent's notoriously aggressive style, making fewer unforced errors (19 to Ostapenko's 33) on her way to the straight-sets win.

Gavrilova moves on to the Round of 32 to face Barbora Strycova of the Czech Republic, who beat France's Alize Cornet 6-3 6-2.

Barty will play Chinese wildcard Saisai Zheng in the next round.
