BRISBANE has made a leadership change ahead of the 2019 NAB AFL Women's season, appointing veteran back Leah Kaslar as its captain.

Emma Zielke led the side to successive Grand Finals in 2017 and 2018 and will remain in the leadership group as a vice-captain.

She will also take on an opposition analyst role as she looks to develop her coaching skills.

The leadership group is rounded out by defenders Sam Virgo and Kate Lutkins, who will also be vice-captains.

Kaslar, a formidable defender who leads the backline along with Lutkins, played all 16 games in the team's two AFLW seasons.

The 33-year-old won the team's most competitive award in 2017 and the 'All For One' (club values) award in 2018.

Brisbane's players voted on who they wanted as skipper, with the results then approved by the coaching staff.

In other news, North Melbourne star recruit and former Lion Kaitlyn Ashmore has had minor surgery on a broken pinkie finger.

Ashmore is expected to be back training with the main group in the new year, having sustained the injury in match simulation on Sunday.
