FREMANTLE have given up their first selection in this year’s draft in a pick swap with Port Adelaide which could pave the way for the club to land Rory Lobb and Jesse Hogan.

The Dockers sent their pick No.6 and a future third-round pick to the Power in return for picks 11, 23, 30 and 49.

The move gets Freo back into the draft after trading away a number of future picks at this time last year. Going off the AFL Draft Value Index, the Dockers also picked up somewhere between 800 and 1000 draft points, around the value of pick No.17 to 23.

While the move takes the club out of the top-end of a very strong draft, they could yet land Brisbane’s pick No.5 if they decide to deal Lachie Neale to Queensland.

GWS forward-ruck Lobb requested a trade to the Dockers early this week, with pick No.23 now likely to be used in those negotiation. The Dockers could also attempt to use pick No.11 in any deal for Hogan, who has yet to declare where he wants to play next season.

Fremantle’s general manager of football Peter Bell explained the deal in a statement from the club.

“We are pleased to have reached an agreement with Port Adelaide, which will see us retain a first-round pick plus secure two second-round selections and a third-round selection,” he said.

“The exchange of selections will provide either more currency in this trade period or, alternatively, be a very attractive proposition for this year’s national draft.”
