Is ABC Radio about to lose the rights to the cricket?
There are fears the ABC’s days of broadcasting cricket are numbered, after a Channel Nine report indicated the sport’s governing body would exclude them from the next round of radio rights.
The Wide World of Sport report indicates Cricket Australia are leaning towards granting one or both of commercial networks Crocmedia and Macquarie Media the rights to broadcast international matches for the next five years, beginning this summer.
The move would leave the ABC - who have broadcast the game since the 1934 Ashes series - out in the cold.
The national broadcaster has become synonymous with cricket in Australia over the decades, making voices like Jim Maxwell household names and helping launch the careers of icons such as Dennis Cometti.
The radio rights negotiations come on the back of the Seven Network and Fox Sports securing the rights to televise the cricket for the next six years in a $1.182 billion deal.
Under the deal, Seven West Media will pay $75 million each year and will broadcast all home Test matches, 43 of the 59 Big Bash League matches (including all finals) and all of the key women’s Big Bash League and international matches.
Fox Sports will exclusively show home one-day international and Twenty20 matches and the remaining 16 games of the BBL on a dedicated cricket channel.
