Socceroos Mat Ryan and Aaron Mooy were both in action in the Premier League on Wednesday morning.

Ryan’s Brighton had a big win, while Huddersfield and Mooy suffered a setback at the hands of Bournemouth.

Plus a new hero emerged at West Ham as 14 goals were scored across four PL games on Wednesday morning.

It’s your Premier League wrap!

BOURNEMOUTH V HUDDERSFIELD
Aaron Mooy’s Huddersfield Town is in danger of dropping back into the relegation zone after suffering a 2-1 loss to Bournemouth.

Callum Wilson scored after just five minutes and Ryan Fraser added the second in the 22nd as Eddie Howe’s side got back on track following losses to Newcastle, Manchester United, Arsenal and Manchester City in recent weeks. However, it had to work hard to see out the win after Terence Kongolo pulled a goal back with a header shortly before the break.

The visitors pushed for an equaliser in the second half but lacked a cutting edge despite having 21 shots on goal. It was Huddersfield’s ninth defeat of the season, leaving it hovering just above the relegation zone.

Bournemouth went ahead thanks to some poor defending from a free kick as Huddersfield tried to play the offside trap, but Matias Jorgenson kept Wilson onside and the England international powered home a free header. It was his eighth goal in 15 appearances this season, matching his career-best tally from last season in 13 games fewer.

The second came after Philip Billing was dispossessed, King set Wilson free and the striker set up Fraser to roll home from just inside the area. Huddersfield tried to respond immediately, though, and forced a trio of impressive saves from Asmir Begovic. First he did well to block Alex Pritchard’s close-range effort, then pulled off the best stop of the three to claw away Laurent Depoitre’s header before also keeping out Aaron Mooy’s free kick. But Begovic was helpless to stop Huddersfield from scoring when Aaron Mooy’s cross was headed on by Christopher Schindler and Kongolo sent a looping header into the corner.

Huddersfield had plenty of the ball after the break but never really tested Begovic in the same manner. The goalkeeper did have to save a low effort from Mooy, who then had a late effort from distance that was deflected wide.

Mooy picked up a yellow card in the 57th minute.

Huddersfield are in 17th place on 10 points but could be overtaken by any of Southampton, Burnley or Fulham, who all have a game in hand.

BRIGHTON v CRYSTAL PALACE
Brighton shrugged off the first-half dismissal of Shane Duffy to ease to a 3-1 home victory over fierce local rival Crystal Palace in the Premier League on Tuesday.

The center back was given a straight red card for thrusting his head into Palace defender Patrick van Aanholt in the 28th minute, with Brighton 1-0 ahead at that stage through Glenn Murray’s penalty.

Despite being a man down, Brighton stretched its lead to 3-0 thanks to goals by Leon Balogun and Florin Andone before halftime.

Balogun, who came on as a substitute following Duffy’s dismissal, scored after being on the field for just 25 seconds.

Luka Milivojevic pulled a goal back from the penalty spot after Wilfried Zaha was fouled, but Brighton won for the second time in four days and moved into the league’s top 10. Palace stayed only three points above the relegation zone.

WEST HAM v CARDIFF
Lucas Perez turned the back of his jersey to West Ham’s jubilant fans and pointed to his name.

After a rather anonymous start to his career at the London club, West Ham fans are much more aware of the Spanish forward after his game-changing display against Cardiff in the Premier League on Tuesday.

Perez scored two second-half goals after coming on as a substitute for the injured Marko Arnautovic, setting West Ham on its way to a 3-1 win at the Olympic Stadium. Michail Antonio also scored for the Hammers, whose goalkeeper Lukasz Fabianski saved a penalty in the first half.

Perez, who previously had an underwhelming spell at Arsenal, joined West Ham from Deportivo La Coruna in the off-season for his second stint in English soccer. Before Tuesday, he had made just five appearances in the league, all as a substitute.

He was summoned to come on earlier than expected against Cardiff, with Arnautovic hobbling off with an apparent left hamstring injury in the 38th minute.

Lucas opened the scoring in the 49th minute by running onto Robert Snodgrass’ lofted pass and driving a fierce shot past Cardiff goalkeeper Neil Etheridge. His second goal, which came five minutes later, was a finish through the legs of Etheridge after being played in by Arthur Masuaku.

That was when he showed the back of his jersey to the fans.

Antonio wrapped up a second straight victory for West Ham — it won 3-0 at Newcastle on Saturday — by heading in an inswinging corner from Snodgrass. Cardiff grabbed a consolation through Josh Murphy with virtually the last kick of the game in the fifth minute of stoppage time.

Earlier, Fabianski guessed the right way to save a 35th-minute penalty from Joe Ralls, after Junior Hoilett was fouled by Arnautovic.

Manuel Pellegrini’s side moved seven points clear of the relegation zone, though the injury to star player Arnautovic is a blow heading into a busy period of matches over the festive period.

WATFORD v MANCHESTER CITY
Manchester City opened up a five-point lead at the top of the table with a seventh straight Premier League victory, but were made to work for a 2-1 win at Watford on Tuesday.

City’s goals came either side of half-time as Leroy Sane chested home to end Watford’s resistance before Riyad Mahrez swept home early in the second period.

However, they had to withstand a nervy finish after Abdoulaye Doucoure bundled home five minutes from time.

Pep Guardiola made six changes to his starting line-up despite also missing Sergio Aguero and Kevin De Bruyne through injury.

Yet, City were still far too strong for the dogged hosts, who had goalkeeper Ben Foster to thank for the visitors not racking up the 5-0 and 6-0 thrashings they did on their two previous visits to Vicarage Road.

Guardiola changed his entire back four from Saturday’s 3-1 win over Bournemouth and left the in-form Raheem Sterling on the bench for the full 90 minutes.

Mahrez came in for the England international and the luxury of options on offer to Guardiola was obvious as both his wide men found the net in Sterling’s absence.

However, Watford were left to rue their chances before the break against a City defence that appeared to miss Aymeric Laporte as the Frenchman was rotated for the first time in the league this season.

Roberto Pereyra has already produced some spectacular goals for the Hornets this season and the Argentine was inches away from another when he curled just wide inside 10 minutes.

City soon took control, though, and Foster made a brilliant save to deny Sane after the German had intercepted a wayward Pereyra pass.

The former England international also spread himself well to claw away Mahrez’s attempted dink over the ‘keeper.

Yet, the best save of the opening half came down the other end when Ederson stretched out his left foot to block Troy Deeney’s effort from point-blank range.

Moments later, City were finally in front. Mahrez’s cross picked out Sane unmarked at the back post and he cleverly used his chest to power the ball below Foster.

Six minutes into the second half, the visitors struck again when Gabriel Jesus — who endured another lean night in front of goal in the absence of Aguero — at least made a contribution as a provider by pulling the ball back for Mahrez to fire home.

City got uncharacteristically slack in the final quarter, though, and were made to pay when Doucoure finally turned home after a goalmouth scramble.

Guardiola was forced to throw on Laporte and Nicolas Otamendi in the closing stages to repel Watford’s aerial assault, but City held on.
