Xiaomi recently made it to top 5 largest smartphone makers in the world and that’s entirely due to its sales in China, truly one of world’s biggest smartphone markets.

Most of Xiaomi’s smartphones are selling like hot cakes in China and other Asian countries like Indonesia and India. After breaking record after record for the largest quantity of smartphones in mere seconds, Xiaomi is now preoccupied to deliver software updates to some of its older handsets.

The company released a document where Xiaomi smartphone users can see which devices will receive the Android 4.4 KitKat and when. According to this document, the Redmi 1, also known as Red Rice, is supposed to receive the KitKat update in mid-February.

True to its promise, Xioami announced today that it’s now looking for 50 beta testers for MIUI 6 running Android 4.4 Kit Kat for Redmi 1. The beta testing should be finished by next week and Redmi 1 devices should start receiving the long-awaited update soon afterwards.

According to Xiaomi, the Chinese ROM will be tested first, not the Global ROM. Depending on how fast beta testers will be in reporting any of the bugs affecting the ROM, MIUI 6 may arrive sooner or later.

MIUI 6 brings lots of new features and visual improvements

MIUI 6 adds a new set of features and options such as the possibility to mark unknown numbers or access free Wi-Fi with WiWide and use a visual menu for voice service calls.

Additionally, the Notification Center will be improved on the Redmi 1, so that users can see details on open apps with just a single tap. Users will also be able to switch over to floating notifications to avoid interruption when playing a game or watching a video.

In the same piece of news, Xiaomi confirmed the next smartphone to receive this update will be Redmi 1S 3G, in late March.
