Spotify joins the group of apps that got pulled from Windows Phone, as the company has suddenly decided to remove support for Microsoft’s mobile operating system.

Details are missing at this point, but Spotify has already confirmed that its application no longer supports Windows Phone, which leaves users with no options when it comes to listening to music in their accounts.
“We can confirm Windows Phone 8.x is no longer supported. You can still use our Spotify application on the associated devices but it will no longer receive any further updates and download the application. We apologize for the inconvenience,” the company says in a statement.
There’s some talk online that Spotify has decided to remove its app from the Windows Phone store because it’s planning to build a new one that could see daylight later this year, but clearly, it doesn’t make sense to delete an existing app as long as its replacement is not yet ready.
Windows 10 universal app Others believe that Spotify is instead looking to focus on a Windows 10 universal app, which would really be great, but the company is not yet ready to discuss such details.
“Regarding Windows 10, we can’t say at the moment if or when any specific release will be out, but as soon as there is something new, you will receive a notification on your device that an update is available and prompted to download it,” Spotify says in another statement.
Although some developers have indeed decided to jump on the Windows 10 universal app bandwagon, it’s no secret that Windows Phone is still suffering from the lack of apps, as top applications currently available on rival platforms are missing from Microsoft’s. The best examples are Snapchat and Google’s apps, which exist on both iOS and Android but are nowhere to be seen on Windows Phone.
Hopefully, Microsoft will find a way to get in touch with developers willing to give up on the platform and convince them to stay because if Windows Phone needs something right now, that’s certainly more apps.
Update: Spotify for Windows Phone lives on, as the company has just confirmed that a Windows 10 version is in the works.
