In spite of the fact that certain smartphones now use triple, quadruple, or even penta-lens setups, Apple’s most expensive iPhones continue to use dual-camera setups on the rear. But as revealed by Steve Hemmerstoffer in partnership with Digit, this could all change with the 2019 iPhone XI.

In particular, it appears Apple could finally adopt a much more advanced triple-camera layout on its next-gen iPhones. But rather than elongating the vertical camera module found in the current models – which would be the most logical design – it seems the Cupertino giant is toying with a completely different look.

As revealed by the render above, the 2019 iPhone XI could adopt a Huawei-inspired square camera unit on the rear. Due to the positioning of the module in the top-left corner and the layout of the sensors within it, though, it’s fair to say that it looks rather odd.

At the moment, the exact details of each sensor remain unclear. However, if previous iPhones are anything to go by, the left column of sensors most likely corresponds to the main camera and the telephoto alternative. Similarly, the right side features an LED flash, a rather large microphone, and what may be a Time-of-Flight (ToF) camera. For those unaware, the latter could be used to create 3D models.

As this smartphone is still around nine months away, the iPhone XI is still very much in the Engineering Validation Test phase of development. This means that, while Apple could ultimately adopt this design on the final device, certain details may be changed between now and the time of release. Alternatively, the Silicon Valley giant may choose to scrap it entirely.
