Viber is a service for smartphones and tablets (Android, iOS, and Windows Phone) that you can use to call other Viber users and send messages. Similar to WhatsApp, it has to be paired with your phone number to work and also has a desktop counterpart for Windows, Mac, and Linux.

In the following guide, we are going to explore the features of the Viber desktop client for Windows to show you how it works. It has public chats and dozens of stickers.

Getting started

After installation, the tool asks you if you have the mobile app installed on your mobile device, since it cannot work without it, so make sure to do this if you don't already have it.

In the following step, Viber auto-opens your QR scanner on the smartphone and requests that you scan the QR code on your monitor for login. Make sure you have a microphone plugged into your PC to enjoy all features provided by this utility.

Conversations, Contacts, Public Chats, Dialer

All your Conversations, Contacts, and Public Chats can be accessed via the first three buttons on the left side of the window afterward. The last button is the Dialer. They can also be accessed from the View menu (or press Ctrl+D to Show Dialer).

In Conversations, Type a message from the bottom part of the panel and press Enter or the purple button with the arrow pointing right to send it. Click the paperclip button on the left side of Type this message and use the file browser to send any files, regardless of their format. Right-click on an empty area to Send Photo using the integrated file browser.
The right side of the conversation pane contains Emoticons and animated Sticker Packs that can be inserted into the chat box by just clicking on them.
On the upper-right side of the conversation pane, click the phone button to Call the other person on Viber, the second button to place a Video Call, or the third to open a panel with more information on the other person, such as total exchanged Media items, Files, Links, and Participants. You can also Delete Conversation.
In the Contacts area, scroll the list of all contacts to view their names and phone numbers. The upper part has a Search box you can use to quickly track down someone by name. Those who have Viber installed are marked by a small, purple button with a phone. Select any entry with a Viber label to start a conversation on the spot. If the person you're trying to reach doesn't have Viber, you can Buy Credit to place a Viber Out call. Contacts can be filtered to display those with Viber Only or All.
In Public Chats, check out a location-personalized list of various people or organizations you can Follow (similar to Instagram) for shared messages or photos, as well as invite your friends via Viber, Facebook, Twitter, Mail or by copying direct links (click on the share button on the upper-right side of this panel).
The Dialer gives you the possibility of placing a call by dialing a number you know by heart or have written somewhere. It looks up partial numbers to match your contacts list as you type, but it's possible to call even people who aren't in your address book.

Settings

The Settings area can be accessed by clicking the gear icon on the upper-right part of the main window or from Options in the Tools menu.

In Basics, you can clear the Start Viber on system startup box if you don't want the tool to automatically run every time you turn on your computer, along with the Save message history box when exiting a conversation to protect your privacy if you share the PC with someone else.
In Audio & Video, you can configure settings for audio and video devices. Click the menus next to Video Input and Audio Input to select other video and audio hardware devices if you have multiple ones installed. You can also click and drag two sliders to adjust the Input and Output Volume, as well as pick another Audio Output device from the menu if you're not pleased with the default setting.
In Notifications, you can control the way Viber Shows notifications (for Calls Only or for both Messages and Calls) as well as audio alerts (Play sounds for All Messages and All Calls, Aggregated Messages, and All Calls, or Calls Only).
In Account, you can manage your Viber account settings and thus empty the list of trusted devices (Clear Trusted Contacts) and disable Viber (Deactivate Viber) while keeping in mind that this will erase your conversation history and app data from the computer. You can also prevent the tool from Collecting Analystics Data by clearing this box.
In Viber Out, you can Buy Credit to place Viber Out Calls.
