Tor-based messenger Briar gets its first stable version

The team behind secure messaging app Briar - which uses the Tor anonymity network or local networks to send and receive messages - has announced that the app is out of beta, as a stable version is now available to download from Google Play.

The company says some new features are in the pipeline for the app. These include the ability to add contacts remotely prior to verifying identities in person, image attachments for messages, and improved battery life.

Team Briar also says they'll start working on developing a desktop client for the service as well.

As for an iOS client, here's what they have to say: "Bringing the P2P messenger to the iPhone is challenging, because Apple does not allow long-lived network connections in the background which are needed for P2P messaging."

Briar only got it's first stable version,it's open source and also have been audited when it was in beta.If you want "state of the art" privacy messenger,Signal by Open Whisper Systems is regarded as the best.I can also recommend Wire by Wire Swiss GmbH.

I guess Russia won't be pleased with this one either.

Telegram should adopt a similar Tor fallback to fight oppressive regimes.

Nice news to hear. Does this app use cloud or direct peer to peer connection? How safe is it?

Thank you @Xanadu, let's wait until this app has more features regarding better privacy. I'm interested in every new chat app which might compete with telegram. We then have more choices
