Sony Xperia Z Ultra should be one of the first smartphones launched by the Japanese company to receive an Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade. However, the highly anticipated move won’t be happening too soon, even though Sony has already released the AOSP source code and binaries for some of its Xperia smartphones.

While everyone expects Sony to release Android 5.0 Lollipop for Xperia Z1, Z2 and Z3, the community is trying to get advantage of the AOSP source code released earlier this month in order to bring Lollipop on other Xperia smartphones as well.

One of the smartphones that has just received an unofficial version of Android 5.0 Lollipop is Sony Xperia Z Ultra. The new ROM is the work of XDA Recognized Contributor Saatvik Shukla and can be used as a daily driver if you can live with some issues.

The current ROM has been ported from the Xperia Z1 AOSP source code thanks to the many hardware similarities between the two smartphones.

However, keep in mind that this ROM will work on the standard version of Xperia Z Ultra, but not on the Google Play Edition model. The latter should be the first Sony Xperia smartphone to receive the Android 5.0 Lollipop upgrade, but it looks like Google is a little behind with the update’s rollout for GPE devices.

Flash it at your own risk!

Anyway, if you happen to own a Sony Xperia Z Ultra and wish to flash this Lollipop ROM on your smartphone, unless you're waiting for the official version, then you should know a few things.

First of all, here are the things that are not working or have issues working correctly, in this unofficial Android 5.0 Lollipop ROM: video playback, camera, signal indicator (broken when connected to LTE), GPS.

Beside the things mentioned earlier, everything else seems to be in order. The following functions are working within the parameters according to devs: audio, touch, SMS, incoming calls, ambient light sensor, Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, RIL (partially), outgoing calls, mobile data.

There’s one thing, though, that might keep you from flashing this ROM on your Sony Xperia Z Ultra and that’s the fact that, without headset, mic will not work. If you can live with that, then go ahead and enjoy Android 5.0 Lolliop on your Xperia Z Ultra.
