Samsung's mid-rangers will use ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanners in 2019
Next year, the Galaxy S10 is expected to adopt a new ultrasonic in-display fingerprint scanner in-display fingerprint scanner. But as part of Samsung’s new mobile strategy, reports from Taiwan are now claiming that similar implementations will also make their way to the company’s mid-range offerings.
According to industry sources, both Qualcomm and MediaTek are leading the way at the moment when it comes to in-display implementations. However, presumably due to the higher standard of quality that Qualcomm offers, Samsung has chosen to stick solely with the latter company. From what can be understood, the company has already placed orders for Qualcomm’s ultrasonic scanners. The first shipments will reportedly arrive by the very end of 2018 or the beginning of 2019, allowing Samsung to implement them in both the Galaxy S10 and upcoming mid-range offerings.
This is a pretty big deal because, at the moment, in-display fingerprint scanners are limited to premium devices. Moreover, current smartphones include the slower and less precise optical sensors, whereas Samsung looks set to implement the more advanced ultrasonic solution across its range.
Considering the first shipments may not arrive until early 2019, it’s possible that the first mid-range offerings complete with in-display fingerprint sensors will join the Galaxy S10 at MWC 2019 in February ahead of a release the following month.
