Rumors surrounding Samsung’s first Android Go smartphone began appearing just a few months back, with everything pointing towards a new device with stock Android Go straight out of the box. Unfortunately, though, and contrary to expectations, new images obtained by SamMobile reveal that the device will actually ship with Samsung’s usual modifications.

Although Google’s Android Go guidelines don’t actually require a stock Android experience, Samsung’s new smartphone, which may launch under the Galaxy J2 Core name, looks set to become the first Android Go offering to ship with a modified UI. In fact, the modifications are so obvious that, upon inspection of the images, it appears the only detail that differentiates this from the majority of Samsung’s other devices is the presence of the Go version of Google’s pre-installed official apps, which take up less storage. On a separate note, the device oddly includes the December 2017 security patch, although this will hopefully be updated ahead of launch.

Now, in regards to the design, the smartphone is certainly nothing special, with it sticking to a more generic Samsung design that includes a more traditional 16:9 aspect ratio and pretty thick bezels. Unlike many of the company’s low-end models, though, this one ships with Samsung’s customized on-screen buttons, instead of the usual physical home key and capacitive alternatives. Also, when it comes to the rear, a plastic build is unsurprisingly included, adorned by a single rear camera and an LED flash.

Presently, it’s unclear when exactly Samsung plans to launch its first Android Go smartphone, but considering quite a bit of testing has been taking place across Europe, Asia, and Latin America recently, an announcement sometime this month seems quite likely.
