Samsung is all-in with virtual reality and to make sure there's enough content on its Gear VR headset, the company announced it will be releasing a 360-degree camera called the Gear 360.

The Gear 360 features 2 f2.0 fish-eye lenses that capture video in nearly 4K resolution at 30 frames per second. It's a bummer that video recordings are in a buttery-smooth 60fps but that's more of a playback limitation of the Galaxy S7 and Gear VR than it is the camera. Check out the camera in our mega slideshow below.

The Gear 360 features a microSD slot for up to 128GB of room for your videos. This will get you about 40 minutes of recording time. The Gear 360 can also take 30 megapixel still images.

While the Gear 360 looks like an action camera, it's really meant to be stationary. It comes with a funky looking tripod which makes the camera look like a Portal sentry gun.

Samsung is making it easy to share footage to Gear VR users and in 2D for non-VR users as well. There will be easy upload to both Facebook and YouTube. Of course, the Gear 360 is designed to play nicely with the just announced Galaxy S7.

LG and Samsung are at war with their new flagships. While the Galaxy S7 seems a bit iterative, LG has gone bonkers and released a modular smartphone with the G5. LG also has its own 360 degree camera to compliment its VR efforts, and it's nice to see both companies go all in with VR. With more content to consume on VR, it looks like the new medium is here to stay.

There's no solid release date for the Gear 360, though the company expects to ship it in Q2 of this year.
