It was just a season ago when we marveled at the first phone prototype with "anywhere" finger scanner situated in the display itself. That Vivo Apex concept you see us previewing above subsequently became a reality, and the floodgates opened.

Not only are we expecting one of the defining new Galaxy S10 features to be a new generation of ultrasonic in-display finger readers, but there are 45 million orders for such scanners for this year's phones by Chinese makers alone, tips Korean media today.

Huawei is expected to order 6 million units for its fall flagships like the Mate 20 Pro, Xiaomi is modest with 3 million, but Vivo and Oppo together are taking in-display scanners to sub-$500 phones en masse, with 33 million in-screen scanner orders combined.

Thus, not even next year, but 2018 is shaping up to be the mass market adoption of in-display fingerprint readers which would free phone makers to go wild on further bezel shrinking without having to move the scanners on the back. Sweet!
