Congratulations OnePlus 3 and OnePlus 3T owners. With Oxygen OS 5.0.3 rolling out starting yesterday, Face Unlock will soon be added to your phone. Originally found on the OnePlus 5T, OnePlus added the facial recognition system to the OnePlus 5 via a software update. At the time that OnePlus was announcing its plans to add it to the OnePlus 5 back in December, co-founder Carl Pei (and owner of one of the best Twitter handles, @getpeid), polled OnePlus 3/3T owners whether they wanted Face Unlock on their phones. The response was an overwhelming "Yes!"

While Face Unlock is faster than Face ID on the Apple iPhone X, it is not as secure. Rather than creating a 3D map of a face, which Apple does with its expensive TrueDepth Camera, the OnePlus system measures identifying marks on a OnePlus owner's face, such as the space between his/her eyes and the space between the nose and lip. This allows older models like the OnePlus 3/3T to add the feature via a simple software update. After five unsuccessful attempts to unlock a OnePlus phone using the facial recognition system, it is disabled forcing the user to use the fingerprint scanner, a security code or a pattern to get into the phone.

The update was sent out yesterday to a small percentage of OnePlus 3/3T owners. A wider distribution of the update will start in a few days. When you receive the notification that the update has arrived, make sure that you are connected to a Wi-Fi network, and that your batteries are fully charged before beginning the updating process.

Because Face Unlock does not require special hardware, it can be used on any Android Phone running Nougat or higher. To add it to your compatible handset, check out the video from OnePlus found at the top of this story.
