Gaming smartphones are gaining serious traction worldwide, as Razer is getting ready to unveil the second generation of its 120 Hz powerhouse, Asus is (presumably) inching closer to the ROG Phone’s US release, while ZTE sub-brand Nubia appears to have something special from a budget-friendly perspective in the Red Magic.

Of course, a number of other companies are also trying to cater to hardcore mobile gamers in various subtle ways, optimizing their software, developing proprietary performance-enhancing features like Huawei’s GPU Turbo mode, or simply equipping high-end phones with blazing fast processors and insane amounts of memory.

HMD Global hasn’t been very vocal about any gaming-friendly functionality on its Nokia-branded Android handsets, but out of nowhere, the company has yesterday started to build buzz around a “phone you can #GameOn.”

Before getting too excited, you may want to remember Nokia has a (recent) history of overhyping routine mid-range releases, pompously describing the Snapdragon 636-powered 6.1 Plus as the brand’s “most awaited phone.”

With the cryptic #GameOn teaser uploaded to Nokia Mobile India’s official Twitter account, there’s a decent possibility the upcoming regional launch of the 5.1 Plus is being hyped up here. If that’s the case, Nokia is wildly stretching the definition of a “phone you can game on”, as the modest 5.8-incher packs a MediaTek Helio P60 SoC paired with 3GB RAM.

Otherwise, the company might be looking to build excitement for a notchless Nokia X7 (aka 7.1 Plus) with a Snapdragon 710 processor or even, dare we say it, the almost mythical Nokia 9 flagship that some claim has been delayed (again) until February 2019. We’ll be sure to keep an ear to the ground and report back as soon as we know with reasonable certainty exactly what Nokia has in the pipeline for gamers.
