StatCounter is one of the main companies that are providing us with market share figures for desktop operating systems and browsers, but the research firm also analyzes the performance of mobile platforms for each individual market, including the United States.

If we are to trust StatCounter data, Windows Phone isn’t doing very well in the United States, with statistics for the month of October 2014 pointing to a market share of only 1.44 percent for Microsoft’s mobile operating system.

While it’s a well-known fact that Windows Phone isn’t quite very popular in the United States and it loses the battle with Android and iOS, there’s no doubt that a 1.44 percent is below expectations and might come as a big shocker for some.

Obviously, it’s hard to tell whether these figures are accurate or not, but they’re just another indication that Microsoft still has a lot of work to do in order to become a powerful rival for Android and iOS.

iOS still topping the charts in the US

Unsurprisingly, Apple continues to hold the leading position in the mobile operating system in the United States, with iOS currently powering a total of 55.22 percent of devices in the country. Android is second with 41.36 percent.

Obviously, Windows Phone performs a lot better in Europe, where StatCounter claims that it powers a total of 3.38 percent of the smartphones on the Old Continent, so it’s very clear that India and other emerging markets continue to be Microsoft’s main targets for continued growth in the mobile industry.

Both iOS and Android are dominating the largest markets out there, and while Microsoft has admitted that it’s really hard to compete with them in the United States, the company keeps improving its own platform to continue the fight.

Different researchers, different statistics

But in order to really determine whether Windows Phone is selling well or not, we obviously have to look at other research firms as well, as figures appear to vary a lot when choosing a different market share analysis company.

Such is the case of Kantar, a firm that keeps an eye on the performance of smartphone platforms in the largest markets across the world, including the United States.

According to their stats, Windows Phone had a market share of 4.3 percent in the United States in September 2014, so it’s hard to believe that Microsoft lost so much ground in this particular market in just 30 days.

Of course, it all depends on whom you ask, but there’s no doubt that Windows Phone still has a long way to go in order to become a powerful smartphone platform.
