Motorola has definitely paid its dues in terms of 2016 smartphone releases. The Moto Z trio has been at the heart of its endeavors, with Moto Mods add-ons giving the also-modular LG G5 a run for its money. Even so, rumors of a new Moto X haven't really been shaken off, and we know many of our readers still hold out hope that such a device is in the pipeline. Perpetual leakster Evan Blass has reignited the fire by sharing an image on Twitter alongside the hashtag #mysterymoto.

What with the Nexus line having recently been nixed in favor of Google's shiny new Pixel handsets, the apparent lack of a new Moto X has left many Android purists feeling like their old favorites are being abandoned. Sure, the Moto Z, Moto Z Play and Moto Z Force each have their strengths, and can be modified in more ways than almost any other smartphone. But we'd be outright lying if we denied our hope that the render shared by Blass is that of an upcoming Moto X.

As you can see, depicted device appears to include dual front-facing speakers but aside from this rather blurry image, there's not much to go on. Devices carrying the model numbers XT1662 and XT1663 were previously thought to reference a new Moto X. Instead, these appear specific to the Moto M leaked last month in the flesh.

It's just a leak for now, so it'd be presumptuous to say that the Moto X (2016) dream is alive and well. Still, we'll keep you updated on any further updates, so stay tuned.
