One of the most popular budget-friendly smartphones launched by Motorola in the last couple of years, the Moto E, is about to get a sequel. The US-based company is already preparing its roadmap for 2015, and a second-generation Motorola Moto E is definitely going to be part of it.

The Moto E is one of the reasons Motorola’s profits skyrocketed this year, as the smartphone sold like hot cakes in emerging markets like India.

The second-generation Moto E won’t be a major upgrade over the current model, but it will bring a few improvements that will make it worthwhile.

The folks over at GSMArena report that the Greek blog site TechManiacs claims Motorola Moto E 2nd Generation will be officially announced “soon enough.”

This means that we could see the updated version of Moto E going official as early as January 2015, when Consumer Electronics Show (CES) 2015, one of the largest telecom fairs, is set to kick off.

If Motorola isn’t be ready with the Moto E 2nd Gen by next month, then we might see it in Barcelona in early March, at Mobile World Congress (MWC) 2015.

Judging by the specs sheet leaked along with the information that Motorola is already working to bring a Moto E sequel to the market, those who already own the original model will probably not be interested to upgrade.

Quad-core CPU, LTE support and bigger display are the only improvements over the original model

The reason is the fact that the upcoming Moto E 2nd Generation doesn’t offer too many improvements over the first model. For example, the unannounced Moto E is supposed to sport a 4.5-inch qHD (540 x 960 pixels) resolution display, while the original model features a 4.3-inch display with similar resolution.

Moreover, both smartphones come with 5-megapixel rear-facing cameras and 1GB of RAM. There are no details on the amount of storage, but the original Moto E features 4GB of internal memory and microSD card slot for memory expansion (up to 32GB).

The Moto E 2nd Generation will be powered by a 1.2GHz quad-core processor, but it’s unclear whether or not it will be Qualcomm’s new 64-bit Snapdragon 410 CPU. That will be a major upgrade over the previous model, which is equipped with a 1.2GHz dual-core processor.

Another improvement could be the fact that the second-generation Moto E will come with LTE support, whereas the current model offers HSPA+ (21Mbps).

Last but not least, Motorola Moto E 2nd Gen will ship with Android 5.0 Lollipop operating system out of the box, but the original version has been confirmed to receive the upgrade as well.
