Microsoft Has a Plan to Boost Windows Phone Gaming and It Could Really Work

Windows Phone is still trailing behind rivals Android and iOS, but with Microsoft looking into more ways to tackle the lack of apps, the future of the platform seems to be very optimistic.

Most recently, the Redmond-based tech giant is looking into ways to boost the gaming side of Windows phones and one possible method to do that is the very same universal app platform.
Mike Ybarra, director of program management for Xbox, explained in an interview with PCWorld that Microsoft is focusing on the Universal Windows Platform to bring more exciting titles on all Windows devices, including phones.
“I think what it starts with is what [we] call the UWP [Universal Windows Platform]. We’re going to start with our strengths—there are millions of [Windows] devices out there, but it’s not the hundreds of millions of devices that iOS has, and I don’t know how many Android has—but it’s a big number, right?” he said.
Universal apps for the win Universal apps allow developers to create a single app that can run on multiple devices powered by Windows 10, including PCs and smartphones, and represent one of the ways that Microsoft is coming down to in order to address the lack of apps on its modern platforms.
“We can get UWPs on the PC and on the console—by definition the platform developers can very easily get it on the phone. And that’s kind of the vision: Don’t think about where you’re at, build your game, do a couple of tweaks and you’re going to see it run. Will you see Halo 18 run on this [phone]? No, so you gotta be smart about that. But we’ll invest in the mobile space as well,” Ybarra continued.
And while the Microsoft executive hasn’t offered any details on how exactly the company “will invest in the mobile space,” it’s very clear that there’s more to come for Windows Phone fans, especially with Windows 10 Mobile just around the corner.
