After having launched it on Windows Phone, Microsoft is bringing Cortana on Windows 10 PCs, but it turns out that the company is preparing a little bit more for fans of the personal assistant.

Today, Redmond has announced that a Cortana application for Android and iOS will be released to users and will be available through a dedicated “Phone Companion” app for PCs. Users will be able to get the Cortana app from Google Play or Apple App Store on their phones through this app, which means that Android and iOS users would need Windows 10 to use Microsoft's personal assistant.

In short, the feature lineup will be similar to the one on Windows Phone, but Microsoft confirms that there will be some limitations on both Android and iOS.

“Some features require access to the system that aren’t currently possible with iOS or Android, so things like toggling settings or opening apps won’t initially be available in the Cortana companions for those platforms,” Microsoft's Joe Belfiore has said.

“Similarly, the ability to invoke Cortana hands-free by saying ‘Hey Cortana’ requires special integration with the device’s microphone, so that feature will be limited to Windows Phones and PCs.”
The Phone Companion application

Everything's possible with the new Phone Companion app that Microsoft has announced today for Windows 10. Basically, once you install this app on Windows 10, you can connect your phone, no matter if it has Windows Phone, Android, or iOS, to a Windows 10 PC, and synchronize files, take notes, work on Office documents, and listen to Music, as long as you have Microsoft's apps installed.

If you own a Windows Phone device, setting it up with the Phone Companion app will be a breeze, Microsoft guarantees, while in the case of Android and iOS, following a simple wizard will be enough.

As far as release dates are concerned, the Phone Companion app will work on Window 10 on a new build that will become available in the next few weeks, Microsoft says. Cortana will arrive on Android phones at the end of June, while iPhones will get it later this year
