Micromax’s smartphone business head, Ajay Sharma, has quit the company, BGR India has learnt. Sharma had joined Micromax in December 2011 from HTC, where he was heading the Taiwanese smartphone vendor’s India ops. BGR India spoke to Sharma, who confirmed he had put in his papers at Micromax but did not reveal his next move.

BGR India has learnt that Micromax’s smartphone business team involving other three to four people have also resigned. Micromax did not confirm Sharma’s resignation or of any other people in its smartphone team.

While Sharma remained non-committal about his next move, BGR India has confirmed he will be joining Chinese smartphone brand Oppo, which will formally launch its operations in India on Thursday.

Micromax is now India’s second largest smartphone brand by volume and launched its smartphones in Russia earlier this month. It claims to be the world’s 11th largest mobile phone brand.
