Rumors on LG’s in-house SoC (system-on-chip) named Odin date from last year when sources in the industry claimed new smartphones and tablets might be equipped with the new application processor.

Even though there were speculations claiming the first device to pack the “Odin” chipset would be the LG G Pad 2 tablet, more recent rumors say the South Korean company will in fact launch a new smartphone powered by its proprietary SoC.

Back in June, we reported on the first smartphone that will probably be powered by the Odin chipset, which surfaced online as LG F490L.

Unfortunately, those who were expecting a new high-end smartphone that will be powered by LG’s Odin chipset will probably be disappointed to hear that the handset maker has decided to put its proprietary application processor into a mid-range device.

Little is known about the yet-unannounced smartphone that should be powered by Odin, but according to CNET, it won’t be long until we know more.

According to sources familiar with the matter, LG will launch a new mid-range Android smartphone equipped with the Odin chipset later this month, “the launch of the new model that is powered by LG's self-developed AP is imminent,” claims an unnamed source.

While there are no details on the exact release date of the smartphone, ZDNET Korea reports that one of its sources said that it would be a derivative model of the LG G3.

The new smartphone may only be launched in a few countries

For those out of the loop, LG’s Odin chipset should be based on the ARM Cortex-A15 architecture and should be packed with ARM big.LITTLE multi-core processor configuration and support for full HD resolution.

The fact that LG has decided against implementing its Odin chipset into flagship smartphones denotes the fact that the South Korean company wants to test it on a much cheaper device before putting it into much expensive devices.

The mid-range Odin-powered smartphone that is rumored to make its way to the market later this month is expected to be officially introduced in South Korea.

It’s unclear whether or not LG will launch the handset in other markets as well, but given the fact that this will act more like a “prototype” for the Odin chipset, there’s a high chance that it will only be available in a few countries.

As always, we recommend our readers to take this info with a grain of salt until LG comes forward with an official statement regarding the availability of a new Odin-based smartphone. Stay tuned for more updates on the matter.
