Curved smartphones are likely to be the big trend in 2014. Whilst Apple and Samsung are expected to reveal next generation models featuring either a curved screen or slightly, ergonomically enhanced curved handset, LG have gone the way of making the entire device casing curved and flexible.

The LG G Flex Curve was launched in Asian markets late in 2013, generating a great deal of interest and curiosity. Distribution deals are now in place, with LG announcing all the major network carriers are going to be offering the device from around March 2014 onwards. No confirmation has yet been given for a European release timeframe.

Inside the phone a Snapdragon 800 quad core 2.26GHz processor powers the Android Jelly Bean operating system, running with 2GB RAM and 32GB storage space. This coupled with the front and rear cameras makes it an above average smartphone in itself, but the selling point is of course the curved appearance and flexibility of the device.

LG claim, and tests confirm, that one can bend the phone to fit in their pocket, with the phone returning to it’s original curved shape without any signs of wear or tear. If for some reason one has bought this curved design phone and wants it to be flat and straight instead, the answer to the question posted by that is yes, one can bend the phone against its curve and have a straight device.

At present LG have only a small percentage of the smartphone market, a market which remains dominated by Samsung and Apple. If they can generate a significant increase in the number of LG users with the G Flex Curve we can expect similar designs from all the other smartphone manufacturers over the next few years.
