Intel will develop the LTE modem chip for next generation Apple iPhones, MacRumors reports. The collaboration could come to fruition as early as the fall of 2016 when the iPhone 7 is expected to be released. Intel’s technology will replace the Qualcomm 9x45 LTE modem chip embedded in previous models.

The 7360 LTE modem chip that Intel has “a small army of people” working on boasts a 450mbps, 3x carrier aggregation, and category 9/10 LTE. Previous rumors suggested Apple could make use of both Qualcomm and Intel’s modems, using Intel chips for devices in Latin American and Asia. However, it is likely Apple’s goal is to build a universal chip. Rumors also hint that Apple has been looking for a way to build its own chip that incorporates the Ax processor and Intel’s LTE modem allowing for faster speed and more efficient use of battery power.
